Application of graphene reinforced composite materials in printing conductive functional parts

Conduction mechanism of graphene composite materials

Graphene is a two-dimensional material composed of carbon atoms and has extremely high electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and mechanical strength. Conductive composite materials can be prepared by dispersing graphene into a polymer matrix. When the added amount of graphene reaches a critical value (percolation threshold), a conductive network is formed inside the material, allowing the originally insulating polymer to gain conductive capabilities. The volume resistivity of graphene composite materials can be adjusted within the range of 10²-10⁶ Ω·cm to meet the conductive needs of different application scenarios. Compared with traditional carbon fiber or carbon black filling, graphene can achieve the same conductive properties at a lower addition amount and has less impact on the mechanical properties of the substrate.

Preparation technology of conductive 3D printing materials

The preparation of graphene conductive composite materials requires solving two major problems: graphene dispersion and interface bonding. There are strong van der Waals forces between graphene sheets and they are easy to aggregate. Ultrasonic dispersion, surface modification or mechanical shearing is required to achieve uniform dispersion. The choice of polymer matrix needs to consider the compatibility with graphene. Commonly used matrices include PLA, ABS, TPU and nylon. Twin-screw extrusion is the most commonly used composite material preparation process and can achieve uniform dispersion of graphene at large production scales. After material preparation, resistivity testing and mechanical property testing are required to ensure stable material performance.

Process points of FDM printing of conductive parts

FDM printing of conductive composite materials requires attention to multiple process parameters. The printing temperature is recommended to be 10-20°C higher than the base material to improve flow and interlayer bonding. The printing speed is controlled at 30-50mm/s. Too fast a speed will cause the conductive network to be discontinuous. The layer height is set to 50-75% of the nozzle diameter to ensure full contact between layers. Filling density has a significant impact on conductive performance. 100% filling can obtain the best conductivity, but low-density printing can be compensated for through design optimization. Print direction also affects conductivity, with conductivity along the print direction being better than perpendicular to it.

Typical application scenarios of conductive functional parts

Conductive 3D printed parts are widely used in the fields of electronics, sensing and electromagnetic shielding. In the field of electronic components, it is used for customized electrodes, circuit substrates and EMI shielding covers. In the field of sensors, it is used in strain sensors, pressure sensors and bioelectrodes. In the field of static dissipation, it is used in anti-static trays, ESD safe enclosures and workbench mats. In the field of flexible electronics, it is used for wearable device electrodes and flexible circuit connectors. Each application scenario has different requirements for conductive performance, and target performance needs to be achieved through material selection and process optimization.

Performance testing and quality assurance

The performance testing of conductive printed parts needs to cover both electrical and mechanical aspects. Electrical performance testing includes volume resistivity, surface resistivity and conductive stability testing. Mechanical property testing includes tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength testing. Environmental aging testing evaluates material performance changes when exposed to heat, moisture, salt spray, and UV environments. Contact resistance testing evaluates the reliability of a conductive electrode's connection to an external circuit. Batch consistency inspection ensures the stability of production quality.
