The damage mechanism of moisture to thermoplastic filaments
When PLA is stored at 80% relative humidity for 24 hours, the moisture absorption can reach 0.4%, and obvious surface bubbles and stringing will occur during printing. Nylon PA6/PA12 is more hygroscopic. It can change from a balanced hygroscopic state to supersaturated state after being exposed to the air for several hours. During extrusion, water vapor expands to create cavities, and the tensile strength can decrease by more than 30%. Even for PETG, a material with relatively low moisture absorption, improper storage can reduce the bonding strength between layers.
Storage temperature requirements for different materials
The standard storage temperature is 20 to 25°C, and the relative humidity is 30% to 50%. For wires that need to be stored for a long time, it is recommended to dry them in an environment of 60°C: PLA drying temperature does not exceed 50°C to avoid pre-sintering, and PETG and ABS can withstand drying at 70 to 80°C. Nylon and PC need to be processed in a drying oven at 80 to 100°C for 4 to 6 hours to reach the standard moisture content for printing.
Consumables management and inventory strategy
For printing companies, it is recommended to establish a hierarchical storage system based on purchase frequency: filaments used weekly can be stored in drying boxes, and filaments used once a month are sealed and stored in moisture-proof boxes. Opened wires should be marked with a date and follow the first-in-first-out principle. Wires older than 6 months must be re-dried and tested according to standard test prints to verify performance before use.
